The Presenters

Notker Wolf OSB

Abbot Primate Dr. Notker Wolf OSB professed first vows as a monk of St. Ottilien Archabbey in 1962. The monks of St. Ottilien elected him Archabbot and President of the Ottilien Congregation in 1977. As president of the Congregation he was responsible for almost 1,100 monks in 18 countries. The Congress of Abbots elected him Abbot Primate on 7 September 2000. He is the highest representative of the Benedictine Order and serves as Abbot of Sant'Anselmo, Rome. In April 2006 he published Worauf Warten Wir? (What are we waiting for?), a collection of critical essays about his native country, Germany.

Sister Carolyn Osiek RSCJ, Th.D., Charles Fischer Catholic Professor of New Testament, Brite Divinity School, Texas Christian University, Fort Worth, TX. Besides writing two books on early House Churches, S. Carolyn edited Early Christian Families in Context with David L. Balch (Eerdmans, 2003). She serves as President of the Society of Biblical Literature. Books.

Terrence Kardong OSB,  Fraternity in the Rule of Benedict (rtf; 37kb)

Father Terrence Kardong OSB STL is the editor of the American Benedictine Review, and the newsletter of Assumption Abbey, Bismarck, ND. His commentary on the Rule of Saint Benedict has become authoritative for English-speakers. The title of his presentation is: "Fraternity in the Rule of Benedict."

Edith Bogue OSB, Learning to Love: Family Sociology in Dialogue with Monasticism (rtf; 1880kb)

Sister Edith Bogue OSB, PhD, is Assistant Professor in the Sociology Department at the College of Saint Scholastica, Duluth, MN. She professed final monastic vows at Saint Scholastica Monastery, Duluth, in January 2006. She explores the interaction between popular culture and family roles in her research and with her students. She recently completed "Does the Seamless Garment Fit? American Public Opinion and the Consistent Ethic of Life" for Protecting the Unprotected: The Power of Being Consistent, (R. MacNair and S. Zunes, eds.). She recently entered the blogosphere with "Monastic Musings" at <>.
