MONASTIC INTERRELIGIOUS DIALOGUE - MID Establishes Goals
The board of directors of the
Monastic Interreligious Dialogue met
at St. Benedict's in Snowmass, CO, October 10-13, 1997. There were
several items on the agenda regarding publications and organizational
matters, as well as planning for the future. Previous goals were
examined to determine what had been done to fulfill them and new
goals were explored. The board set forth a list of goals to be
implemented in the coming years, which are as follows:
To carry out our mission of intermonastic dialogue, as appointed
by our monasteries and Vatican charge by:
- reflecting on the Gethsemani Encounter and furthering the
dialogue around the mystery of suffering and the cross;
- sustaining our dialogue with Tibetan Buddhists and broadening
our dialogue with Buddhists of the Zen and Theravadan traditions
and widening our dialogue to Hindu and Islamic traditions;
- emphasizing the Christian meditation practices of lectio
divina and contemplation in the dialogue with Eastern meditation
traditions;
- training our board, contact persons, superiors, lay
collaborators and young scholars on East-West dialogue issues and
dialogue practices.
