The Foxe version of the Rule of St. Benedict, in early modern English, was translated from the Latin and feminized by Bishop Richard Foxe (or Fox) of Winchester for the nuns of four monasteries in his diocese. It was printed in London in 1516.
The English translation is consistently feminized except for three chapters (60, 62 and 67) which Bishop Foxe stated are not applicable to nuns. He includes them for the sake of completeness and so that the nuns would know what also applied to monks. In addition to a Foreword by the translator, numerous expansions occur throughout the text. The version presented here was transcribed from a microfilm of the original text.
See the Index for further information regarding principles of transcription and presentation used here.
Each verse is identified by number and begins on a new line. Each substantive expansion is identified by letter and also begins on a new line. Notes are identified by asterisks in the text and are placed at the end of the relevant verse.
Individual chapters of the Foxe Version of the Rule of St. Benedict are linked to the chapters of the following Table of Contents. (These chapter headings are taken from the translation, RB1980).
