Summer Formation at Sant’Anselmo: Three English-Language Programmes for 2026

Sant’Anselmo will offer three formation programmes in summer 2026, supporting monks, nuns and oblates with practical training, renewal and focused study in the heart of Rome.

Sant’Anselmo continues to serve the Benedictine world as a centre of formation and reflection where contemporary questions meet the depth of monastic tradition. Its summer initiatives for 2026 respond to the needs voiced across the Confederation: practical leadership training, opportunities for renewal and sabbatical rest, and structured formation for oblates seeking to deepen their vocation. Each programme is rooted in the life of the Aventine community and shaped by the academic, cultural and spiritual resources that define Sant’Anselmo’s mission.

The programme Leadership and the Rule of Saint Benedict, 5-18 July, offered in partnership with the University of St Gallen, provides a structured introduction to management for monastic leaders navigating complex decisions. Drawing on the Rule’s approach to discernment and responsibility, the course brings together scholars and experienced superiors to help participants read their current challenges with clarity and identify workable paths forward. More than a decade of experience has allowed the faculty to refine the curriculum, resulting in a practical and grounded formation for those entrusted with governance. Monastic Aggiornamento, 4-24 July, offers monks and nuns a three-week sabbatical designed to restore perspective and foster renewal. Set within the quiet rhythm of Sant’Anselmo, the programme combines conferences on contemporary issues with guided visits to Rome’s principal sacred sites and to the historic monasteries that shaped Benedictine life. Participants step back from daily pressures, engage in thoughtful dialogue and rediscover the sources of their vocation through study, reflection and shared experience. The Oblate Monastic Summer Studium, 5-25 July, introduces participants to the central themes that influence Benedictine life today. Over three weeks, oblates explore the challenges and opportunities posed by digital culture and artificial intelligence, reflect on spiritual practice in a pluralistic world and consider how prayer shapes daily life. Pilgrimages to significant Benedictine places complement the classroom sessions, allowing participants to connect learning with lived experience and with the broader Benedictine family. Together, these programmes affirm Sant’Anselmo’s role as a gathering point for Benedictines seeking formation, renewal and shared purpose. By bringing monks, nuns and oblates into conversation with one another and with the rich resources of the Aventine, Sant’Anselmo continues to strengthen the bonds of the Confederation and support communities as they respond to the needs of the present age.
