Commentaries and reactions

"It was published on 22 March 2002. But the decree of promulgation is dated 20 April 2000, saying it should be used for solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ for 2000. Historical questions emerge: Did the Pope approve the changes made since 2000? What was the process for the revision? When does the 2002 Roman Missal become law? What explanations and education is [sic] being done?" Roman Missal 2000 discussion thread (4 April 2002-).

"Persevere, keep up your courage and be voices of hope," Bishop Donald Trautman of Erie, Pa., said in an address July 30 to the National Association of Pastoral Musicians' Region 1 convention, held in Rochester, N.Y. The convention's theme was "Voices of Hope," and Trautman spoke at some length about the meaning of hope and its importance. "Christian hope," he said, "is the art of perseverance, the courage to be in the circumstances where we find ourselves." He said also, "I am convinced that the most needed virtue for a disciple today is courage." Trautman described several specific signs of "an orchestrated applying of the brakes to liturgical renewal" and said that "many liturgical ministers have become disillusioned, dejected, disheartened" because of this. But he told the pastoral musicians that "these liturgical skirmishes must never be center stage. The spotlight must always be on one basic question: Has the renewed liturgy renewed us?"
